Stock Up for Thanksgiving & Christmas

“Butterball turkeys are on sale,” a voice said from behind the newspaper.

“Already?” I asked, surprised.

“Mom, it’s already November,” my financially astute daughter with a degree in  accounting, responded.

Oh, dear friends, here it is already November. It is time to buy, buy, buy, shop, shop, shop. Or is it? If you are like me, this holiday season finds my wallet with a lot less money inside it this year. I am having to modify my spending, which means that I will have to modify my celebrating.

Am I worried?

Panicked?

Sad?

No, I am not. I am totally trusting God to make this the best celebration ever–just less expensive.

Stock Up Now!

I have tried to set money aside for holiday spending, but there has been no extra. But, I am stocking up on baking goods and things I can pop in the freezer. I will buy a butterball turkey this week, but I will also find better deals as we get closer to Thanksgiving. After Thanksgiving, sales will not be as good, so I will stock up on turkeys for the winter until Thanksgiving.

Since I have been doing holiday baking and cooking for 26 years, I have a list in my head that I can shop from. If you cannot remember all the things you will need for holiday cooking and baking, then make a list and keep it in your wallet.

We go through more brown sugar, flour, white sugar, baking powder, cream cheese, yeast, canned pumpkin, olives, onion soup mix, nuts, and chocolate chips than we do the rest of the year combined. I begin to stock up on these items in October and continue until we get close to Christmas. I watch for sales, use coupons, and compare prizes. These items all store in the refrigerator, pantry, or freezer and keep well.

If you peek inside my freezer in the garage during the December or January, you will find it stuffed with turkeys, but they will be eaten one by one so that by March, there will all be gone. This is my shopping tradition each year.
