Finish Well: Run the Race Together I

1/30/2012

Picture
Lives are changed in the context of relationships! It is in our best interest in our homeschooling high school race, to finish well. Finishing the race well can sometimes depend on who you are running with and who is cheering you on as you run.

Now, don't get me wrong. I don't believe that it takes a village to raise a child. I believe that it takes a family to raise a child. I believe that homeschooling is so effective because it puts raising and educating a child in the hands of the people who love him most:  the parents!

With that said, we all need people in our lives to be effective and productive. God made us to need one another. In our homeschooling, we need other people too. Some of the most important people we need to homeschool high school effectively are our husbands, our children, other homeschooling families, and a support system.

Economics 101

Picture
"Well Brian keeps the economy humming," I giggled to my husband as we talked late one evening. Our friend, Brian, had dropped in to show us his latest purchases that included a dart gun, a music CD, and a new amp for his guitar.

Where the money came from was a mystery. He worked for Khol's, drove a motorcycle, and lived in his own house. His checking account hovered near zero and he didn't even have a savings account.

What is a Economics?

We are told by politicians that people spending money is a sign of a "healthy economy." But is it? What is a healthy economy in God's eyes? And what is economics anyway?

Economics is the study of the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services according to Webster's dictionary. Goods are products such as televisions, ships, jeans, jewelry, ice cream, or bikes. Services include hair styling, banking, cleaning, interior decorating, or teaching. People make, sell, and buy goods and services day in and day out. In the process of all this producing, selling, and buying, money is exchanged. That's why we study money, inflation, debt, and interest too.

You see, economics is simple. It is just studying what people make and do and how those things are sold. Daily life is full of buying things. We go to work and produce things (goods) or do things (services) to make money.

Money is constantly flowing from one place to another. Imagine the dollar bill in your purse. Where has it been? Where is it going? Maybe it was a little boy's allowance and he used it to buy a candy bar at 7-11. The cashier gave it as change to your daughter when she bought a Big Gulp. Your daughter used it to pay your husband back the dollar she owed Daddy, but then he needed larger bills and traded you all the ones and fives in his wallet for a twenty dollar bill.

Building Thinking Skills Review

Picture
The first time I used Building Thinking Skills was back in 1998.

When Julianna finished the book (six months sooner than our lesson plans called for!), she asked for the next one. She loved figuring out the logic problems. It was more like a game to her than a school workbook.

I have been a fan of this series for years!

I was thrilled to get Building Thinking Skills Level 2 by Sandra Parks and Howard Black to review! Now, This workbook covers logical thinking, similarities & differences, sequences, classifications, analogies, antonyms & synonyms, spatial awareness, vocabulary development, following and writing directions, descriptive writing, geometry concepts, map reading, and graphic organization.

It is a massive book with 367 pages of thinking skills workbook pages plus an answer key at the back. You can buy it on their website, Critical Thinking.

Homeschooling High School is Like Boating!

1/26/2012

Throughout all the plans, classes, and endless documentation of high school, we want to keep our eyes on our destination. Let's talk about boating.

On a boat trip, you must steer carefully, not getting too close to the sides, lest you run aground. This is accomplished by keeping our eyes on our destination (the goal!) and maintaining vigilance.

Depth

Depth of the water is important when boating. The water needs to be deep enough for the boat to glide through without touching the bottom. Spiritual depth is important in our own lives so that we can impart our faith to our beloved children and receive grace to homeschool for the glory of God. We also need to maintain vigilance about the depth of our children's walks with the Lord. Doing certain "normal" teenage things (like dual enrolling or joining the church youth group) require a depth in their walk with the Lord that will withstand the temptations that assault our teens in these situations.

Steer Clear of Obstacles

Literature for Life

1/24/2012

Picture
"Mrs. Rachel Lynde lived just outside where the Avonlea main road dipped down into a little hollow, fringed with Alders and Ladies' Eardrops and traversed by a brook that had its source away back in the woods of the old Cuthbert place; it was reputed to be an intricate, headlong brook in its earlier course through those woods, with dark secrets of pool and cascade; but by the time it reached Lynde's Hollow, it was a quiet, well-conducted little stream, for not even a brook could run past Mrs. Rachel Lynde's door without due regard for decency and decorum; it probably was conscious that Mrs. Rachel was sitting at her window, keeping a sharp eye on everything that passed, from brooks and children up, and that if she noticed anything odd or out of place she would never rest until she had ferreted out the whys and wherfores thereof," (Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery, opening paragraph)
Picture
From the moment we read this paragraph, we are hooked! To the little town of Avonlea we go, across the Lake of Shining Waters, greeting beloved folk, especially the inhabitants of Green Gables. Literature takes us to delightful places such as Prince Edward Island.

All people in all places around the world love stories. It must be because our Creator is the Master Storyteller and we live in anticipation of His final climax: His Glorious Return and the final destruction of our enemy and all those in his bondage. As we gather together with extended family, there are always stories, "I remember when I met your mother..." "The first time he ever..." "When I was your age...." Once we hear the beginning of a good story, we are hooked, wanting to hear the rest of the tale.

We teach our children to read so that they can read the Bible, drawing closer to their Savior and Redeemer, Jesus. That is the most important reason. We also want them to read to learn. They will read all kinds of writing that brings knowledge and information. There is a third reason we teach our children to read: we give them a passport. This passport can take them on any adventure they would like to embark on, to places where they can meet people they've dreamed of meeting, or to any place in the entire world, real or imaginary.

When children are young, teach them to value reading as a treat and privilege--something they look forward to! If your child is always having to write a book report or read books he doesn't like, reading may not be a great joy in his life. If television is always on, he will most likely choose it because watching television is a passive activity that requires no mental exertion! Remove the computer and the television as competitors by limiting their use. You might have television-free and computer-free hours between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

To Be... A Trash Can or A Crystal Vase?

1/23/2012

Picture
The trouble is that I know I should want to be a crystal goblet but a want to be a trash can.

So, I just go through the motions of wanting to be a crystal goblet, but my heart is on being a trashcan," my young friend admitted. "What can I do?"

"You have to have a heart transplant. You need a new heart that wants to be a crystal goblet."

"In a large house there are articles not only of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay; some are for noble purposes and some for ignoble. If a man cleanses himself from the latter, he will be an instrument for noble purposes, made holy, useful to the Master and prepared to do any good work" (II Timothy 2:20-21 NIV).

How do these verses relate to crystal vases and garbage cans?

Praying about Money

Can we bring our financial troubles to the Lord? Of course we can!
Picture
Are you struggling financially? Is it hard to pay the bills? Are there doctor appointments or medical procedures that you can't afford? Are you tempted to borrow money? Are there expensive desires that won't go away--you just have to have something, but the Lord isn't providing? Do you need a better paying job? Do you need to find a career track that is fulfilling, but also pays the bills?

Have you made bad choices and now you are paying the consequences? Do you have bad financial habits such as borrowing money, spending money impulsively, or not balancing your checkbook? Do NOT stay in your current situation one more minute!

Master Plan of Evangelism Review

1/20/2012

Picture
I finally read "The Master Plan of Evangelism," Laura admitted to me. (I thought she had read it years ago.)

"Did you like it?" I asked, dying to ask her why she had waited so long to read it when I had been begging her to read the book for nine years!

"I tried to read it several times, but it isn't really light reading material," she informed me.

I nodded in agreement. It isn't light reading material. In fact, while most books we read are written at a fifth to eighth grade level, this book is written for college students so it is a more challenging read.

"I loved the book!" Laura broke into my thoughts. "You were right about it making you see all of life in a new way."

"Really?"

"Really.  I'm so glad I read it.  I'll never be the same!"

Picture
I read The Master Plan of Evangelism by Robert E. Coleman when I was a sophomore in college. This book changed my life! I have my children read it in high school for one of their Bible classes. It is a book that I would like to see more Christians read, especially homeschooling parents. Robert, born in 1928, grew up in Texas, attending a Methodist church. He pastored for six years and moved into teaching. He has a Masters in Theology from Princeton, a PhD from the University of Iowa, and a Doctorate of Divinity from Trinity International University. His writing style is academic, but don't let them keep you from reading this book.

Along the way, Dr. Coleman became convinced that schools were not the answer to raising up mighty men of God. He carefully studied the life of Jesus, coming to the conclusion that Jesus knew exactly what He was doing in laying a foundation for the Church. Dr. Coleman values Jesus' pattern of ministry and embraces it in his own life.

Jesus spent His life calling people to repent and believe while healing the sick and injured, performing all kinds of miracles, and teaching His beloved people. However, He invested in a small group of men, His disciples. These He gave focused time and attention to for three years. He imparted to them truth and modeled a lifestyle that they could imitate. What a blessing to take a closer look at the life of Jesus!

The Body of Christ is called to fulfill the Great Commission by spreading the good news, leading people to Christ, and making disciples. We are called to evangelism. But, Dr. Coleman wants to make it clear that Jesus' definition of evangelism is broader than our own and involves mentoring people to a place of maturity.

Finish Well by Putting a Tent on Your Teen's Forehead

1/19/2012

Picture
_  "Hi, Mom. How was your meeting?"

"Well, it didn't go quite as I had planned?' I answered my middle daughter, Jenny-Rose, a senior in high school.

"I'm so sorry," she replied empathetically. "What happened?"

"If you don't mind, I don't want to rehash it. Needless to say, there were several people who did not see eye to eye and the meeting had many awkward moments."

"Can I pray for you?"

"Yes, thank you, Rosie. Please!"

Yes, this is a real conversation that took place in our home. My Rosie is gentle and sweet, noticing when I need some encouragement. When she is discouraged, we talk and I pray for her. I have four daughters and we all pour our hearts out to one another. There is always one of us girls who needs to talk and another who is willing to listen.

Strong relationships are built upon healthy communication. How can we improve communication with our teens?

Put a Tent on Their Forehead
Picture
_ "Place a ten on their forehead," Pastor Mike was explaining. "Let people know that on a scale of one to ten, they rate a ten in your eyes. When you look at your children, picture a ten on their forehead."

Laura had a puzzled look on her face.

"Is something wrong?" my husband asked.

"Well, I understand your point, but I don't see how picturing a tent on Zack's forehead will help me value him more," Laura answered referring to her son.

We all laughed and, to this day, we speak of putting a tent on someone's forehead.

Place value on your teens! Let them know that they are A-#1 in your eyes. Remind them over and over of how much joy and blessing they bring to your life.

Speak Respectfully to your Teens

Treat your teens with respect as people. Thank them, apologize to them, and honor them whenever it is appropriate to do so. Try saying, "Would you please take out the garbage?" instead of "Are you ever going to get this garbage out?" Talk to your children they way you would talk to friends that you really admire.

Respect is really a heart issue. No matter how hard we try to cover it up and how good of a job we think we are doing, teens can always tell when you are frustrated with them. The only way to overcome frustration and anger is to go to the Lord and keep praying until His love floods your soul!

Control your Voice Level

IF ONLY

Picture

"This is what the LORD says—your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: “I am the LORD your God, who teaches you what is best for you, who directs you in the way you should go. If only you had paid attention to my commands, your peace would have been like a river, your righteousness like the waves of the sea. Your descendants would have been like the sand, your children like its numberless grains; their name would never be cut off nor destroyed from before me,” (Isaiah 48:17-19).

You might find yourself in trouble today, or in a difficult situation.

It just might be a trial to test your faith and reveal what you are made of.

Or, it might be spiritual warfare--a battle God wants you to fight.

Picture
I am sorry to tell you that often, when God's children are in trouble it's because they have ignored their Heavenly Father.

If only we had paid attention to the Lord's commands and plan, we would find ourselves in a different place.

We have a hard time listening to the Lord because we have our own plans and our own agenda. Sometimes we hear from the Lord and know God's plan for our lives but we run ahead of God's, wanting to do His will in our timing rather than His plan in His time.

The Secret to Financial Success

1/15/2012

The secret to financial success is quite simple! It is two little words that pack a big punch. The secret to financial success is....delayed gratification.
Picture
Delayed Gratification? What is that? Well, it means to postpone what you want, to wait for what you desire to obtain.

"All of these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance. And they admitted that they were aliens and strangers on earth. People who say such things show that they are looking for a country of their own. If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return. Instead, they were looking for a better country--a heavenly one. Therefore, God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them," (Hebrews 11:13-16 NIV).

The writer of Hebrews is talking about Abel, Enoch, Noah, and Abraham in these verses, explaining how delayed gratification was working in their life. He calls it faith, but it is also the practice of waiting for the desire of one's heart. We, of course, like these men of faith, desire our own heavenly city, the glorious place Jesus has prepared for us to live in forever!

But we also desire many things on this earth. We want a place to live, food to eat, and clothing to wear..and shoes, jewelry, televisions, mp3 players, minivans, vacations, movie tickets, scarves, dinners out, college tuition...you get my point. Our list of desires goes far beyond basic necessities.

God is delighted to bless us--a simple statement, but the foundation of delayed gratification. If we believe that God wants to bless us with the desires of our heart, then we can WAIT for Him to provide. Until He provides the tiem or the money to buy the item, we can wait, postponing our purchase until His perfect timing. Purchasing something with a credit card is not delaying gratification. Borrowing money from your child or parent is not delaying gratification.

Apologia Science Textbooks Review

1/13/2012

Picture
Christ-centered with an emphasis on the wonder of God's Creation, Apologia  textbooks are always a favorite of mine! I enjoy Apologia textbooks because they are easy to understand, full of beautiful pictures, and have hands-on activities that require things I can find around my house. But my very favorite thing about ALL Apologia textbooks is that they honor God as the Creator and Sustainer of Life! Apologia seeks to promote Creationism by filling the readers' hearts with wonder as the marvels of the Creation are explained!

I am reviewing three Apologia science textbooks: Exploring Creation with Zoology: Flying Creatures of the Fifth Day for elementary students, Exploring Creation with General Science for middle school students, and Exploring Creation with Biology for high school students.

One of my favorite parts of Apologia's textbooks is a page right near the beginning titled, "Need Help?" The entire page is devoted to getting help through the mail, email, on the web, by fax, and by phone. It gives you the idea that they care about helping homeschooling families! Apologia is supportive and available. One more thing to love about Apologia!

Finish Well with Daniel

1/10/2012

Picture
Everybody knows the story of Daniel and his friends in Daniel chapter one. He resolved not to defile himself with the unclean food of the Babylonians because he was a servant of the Lord. The guard agreed to let Daniel and his friends eat a different diet that would honor the God of Israel.

"At the end of ten days they look healthier and better nourished than any of the young men who ate the royal food. So the guard took away the choice food and the wine they were to drink and gave them vegetables instead. To these four men God gave knowledge and understanding of all kinds of literature and learning. And Daniel could understand visions and dreams of all kinds," (Daniel 1:15-17 NIV).

Daniel's Choice Leads to Blessing

Not only did God bless these young men spiritually who had resolved not to defile themselves, but he also gave them knowledge and understanding of literature and learning. If we want to raise smart and godly kids, there is only one way to do it!  Resolve to not defile them with the world's ways, but instead always seek first the Kingdom of God. The Lord always blesses those whose hope is set on Him!

French Onion Soup Recipe

1/9/2012

Picture
1/2 Cup Unsalted Butter
4 Onions, sliced
2 Garlic Cloves, chopped
2 Bay Leaves
2 Fresh Thyme Sprigs
Kosher Salt & Freshly Ground Pepper
1 Cup Red Wine, about 1/2 bottle
3 Heaping Tablespoons All-Purpose Flour
2 Quarts Beef Broth
1 Baguette, sliced
1/2 Pound Grated Gruyere

Melt the stick of butter in a large pot over medium heat. Add the onions, garlic, bay leaves, thyme, and salt and pepper and cook until the onions are very soft and caramelized, about 25 minutes. Add the wine, bring to a boil, reduce the heat and simmer until the wine has evaporated and the onions are dry, about 5 minutes. Discard the bay leaves and thyme sprigs. Dust the onions with the flour and give them a stir. Turn the heat down to medium low so the flour doesn't burn, and cook for 10 minutes to cook out the raw flour taste. Now add the beef broth, bring the soup back to a simmer, and cook for 10 minutes. Season, to taste, with salt and pepper.

Where Did All My Money Go?

1/8/2012

Picture
"I lost all my grocery money," I admitted sheepishly to my dear husband of 27 years.

"Honey, you didn't lose it. You just can't remember where you left it. Let's retrace your steps." Mike always has a plan.

As you get to know me, you'll find that I like to use cash for some things, including grocery money. However, this had been a crazy day and Mike had handed me the grocery money as soon as he walked in the door and I had been busy, so I had put it down somewhere....

"That's it!" I shouted, finding the money exactly where I had left it.

Unfortunately, we can't always put our finger on where all our money goes so easily. Sometimes, it just seems to slip through our fingers. Does your budget work on paper, but not in real life? Maybe things are so tight that you don't even bother to have a budget. Let's do our finances God's way, being good stewards. Good stewards know where the money is and where it goes.

My husband is a pastor. We have walked many couples through financial management as part of our ministry. It isn't easy to change our mindset and habits when it comes to money.

Math Tutor DVD Review

1/6/2012

Picture
"I'd love to homeschool, but I'm scared to teach my kids math," is a cry of despair I have heard through the years.

Why is math so intimidating for homeschooling moms?

I really don't have the answer to that question, but I just might be able to help homeschooling moms whose nemesis is math. Yes, you can have your child dual-enroll at a nearby community college, but that probably won't work for the elementary years!

There is a solution for those who would rather have someone else teach their children math, but don't want to take them to one more outside activity! If we need help, we really need daily help because math is a subject that our children should do every day.

I received two DVDs, The
Algebra 2 Tutor (6 hours of instruction) and The Basic Math Word Problem Tutor (8 hours of instruction) to review and was very impressed with the teacher and his style of teaching. Jason is a very calm and easy-to-understand teacher. We often only see his back because he is working problems out on the board. In fact, that's what I loved about the DVD--it is full of practical help! All of the teaching is done through example problems. That's how I like to learn math!

"Hillsong has a new worship CD out?" Laura informed me excitedly. "It's called God is Able."

In my heart, there was no hesitation. I would buy it. I own every Hillsong and Hillsong United worship CD. Why? I love the melodies, the music, the words, and the heart behind the song. As a worship leader, I can tell the songs are written by worship leaders. The songs bring people into the Presence of God! Why? I think they are written by men and women who experience the Presence of God.
Picture
What do I appreciate about Hillsong's music?
  • Love for Jesus
  • Surrender to the Lordship of Jesus
  • Sound Doctrine
  • Love for the Local Church
  • Love for One Another
  • Creativity
  • Singable Songs
Here are some of my very favorite Hillsong worship songs.

Benefits of God\'s Word

1/4/2012

There are so many benefits of reading, studying, memorizing, and meditating on the Word of God.

Benefits of God's Word
Picture
When we meditate on God's Word, the result is bearing fruit, prospering, and health (Psalm 1).

When we meditate on God's Word day and night, obeying God's Word, we will experience success (Joshua 1).

The Bible has the power to change our lives! When we memorize verse and passages, we are able to avoid sin (Psalm 119:9-11).

We need to "wash with water" through the Word. Scripture washes away the crud in our lives (Ephesians 5:25-27).

Light for a New Year, 2012

1/3/2012

Welcome to a brand new year! As I have been digging into God's Word the past few weeks, I have been bombarded with passages on light. Let's start 2012 off with some encouragement from the Bible about light for our home schools.

Jesus is the Light
Picture
"I am the Light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life," (John 8:12 NIV).

Jesus is the light of the world. In Him, there is no darkness, no hiding, no deception. He is full of mercy and truth. His light in our lives changes everything.

Light for Homeschooling

Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you," (Isaiah 60:1 NIV).

In the Bible, light represents truth and holiness. The Bible reveals truth to us for all of life, including homeschooling. The Holy Spirit is busy at work within us, purifying us and making us holy like Jesus. The more we are like Jesus, the better we will be at teaching our little ones to follow Him and apply Scripture to all of life.

Walk in the Light

Now, keep in mind that 10 people lived in our house at the time. Wow! That was inconvenient! Mike and I lived below the poverty line for years while he was in seminary and for a few years afterward. We had scrimped and saved our pennies, shopped for presents at the Dollar Store, and lived on as little as possible. We never paid bills late or used government assistance because God always came through, though sometimes at the very last minute.

Here we were almost 50 and our business income had plummeted. Not only the economy, but new regulations from the EPA that were hard to pin down precisely for application. We were not alone. Friends we knew who used to bring home 6 figures are now delivering pizzas with a thankful heart. Maybe you are going through difficult times as well or scared of a possible lay-off. What does God want us to do?
