We are traveling in our co-op.
Nine families at Powerline Church gather twice a month to learn geography and science together. Laura is teaching biology and chemistry. Leah is teaching maps and botany. I am teaching geography. What fun!
"Do you have your passport and boarding pass?" I asked the children entering our home.
They quickly fumbled into their back packs for their passports and boarding pass for Powerline Air.
The officials took the passports, comparing the picture on the passport to the faces of the children. Then it was time to walk through the arch for security check. Maria had a secret buzzer (from the game Taboo), so kids and parents were continually stopped and had to be examined with the scanner. This made everyone laugh!
The plane was actually our family room rearranged to have rows of seats and a center aisle where our stewardesses could pass their cart up and down to serve refreshments, small bags of chips and bottles of water. Once we took off and the plane was at cruising altitude, we turned on the flight movie, an powerpoint about the earth, globes, maps, seven continents, four oceans, and lines of latitude and longitude.
Here is our schedule for the Year:
September: Earth, Maps, Globes, Latitude, Longitude, Landforms, Biomes, Climate, Seasons, Time Zones
October: North America & Deserts of the World
November: South America & Rainforests of the World
December: Polar Regions
January: Asia & Islands of the World & Volcanoes of the World
February: Africa & Grasslands of the World
March: Europe & Mountains of the World
April: Oceania & Australia & Seaport Cities of the World
Every month, each family chooses a country, researches, and presents a report to the co-op. Here are the countries we chose this year. Each family worked together to study the country and prepare a visual report to share with the rest of the co-op.
