Do you want to have more fun when you teach history?

In our house, we love to cook and bake to learn history. We time travel right in the kitchen.

Here is our Time Travel in the Kitchen: American History Cookbook. We used it in our home and in our American history co-op. Everyone loved it!
Each family took a week to make a meal from Colonial Times, The Alamo, The Transcontinental Railroad, The Gilded Age, or World War II--whatever we were studying. Some of the recipes are adapted from original recipes from old history cookbooks and famous recipe collections. I adapted Louisa May Alcott's Blueberry Slump,  Thomas Jefferson's Monticello Noodles, and Martha Washington's Fruit Cake. I think you will have a blast cooking and eating your way through time!

Here are some of the recipes we enjoy! You can make them in your kitchen and travel back in time. There are over 300 recipes in this cookbook!
  • Navajo Fry Bread
  • Hoecakes
  • Turtle Soup
  • Hasty Pudding
  • Carolina Muddle
  • Boston Baked Beans
  • Mount Vernon's King's Onion Soup

History is a favorite subject at the Curtis house and when we added cooking and baking to learning about “the olden days,” It just made everything more fun. When I talked about cutting the historical meals out of co-op next year, my son said, “Mom, you can’t do that. The food is the best part!” Please let me know how you enjoy using this cookbook.

Timelines add adventure and fun to learning about history! In our home, we love making and using timelines to give everyone in the family a bird's eye view of whatever time period we are studying. Timelines just put all the people, events, discoveries, and works in perspective--especially for our big-picture people!

Picture your family gathered around the timeline--gluing on the beautiful timeline figures to their timeline pages. First, they read about the timeline figure and grab the date so they know where to place the timeline figure. Once the glue dries and the timeline is completed, it becomes a resource to use in years ahead.

This is the timeline we use for the twentieth century. We like to do our timeline first and then read the chapters in the book related to our timeline figures. Of course, we find ourselves going back over and over again to the completed timeline as we study the new information.

Bright and colorful, these timeline figures are beautiful. From movies and sports to poilitical events and wars, there is a nice variety to bring any study of the twentieth century to life. We hope you will enjoy our timeline and timeline figures as much as we have.
